Print and Plain Sewing Competition – Monochrome Floral Print and Plain Peplum Jacket by Deb.
I have only recently joined the mailing list for Designer Stitch School of Fashion & Design and am very excited to show my entry in the Print and Plain Sewing Competition!
The competition has given me the incentive to make a fully lined peplum jacket that is suitable to wear for both evening and smart casual, making it ideal to take with me when travelling!
After cutting out the paper pattern, checking sizing and selecting the materials from my stash I was ready to begin. The pattern I used is McCalls M5859
I followed the instructions for view B. The floral material is cotton sateen and I used black satin for the collar & lapel.
After cutting out the pieces, I carefully selected the ones to be used for the outside of the jacket so that the overall effect from the floral pattern was uniform and even.
I lined it with white “Sunsilky” lining (this lining doesn’t crease much when washed & makes ironing easier!)
I decided not to put pockets on it but instead have made a small fringed shoulder bag to compliment the jacket. It too is fully lined, has machine embroidery in silver thread with hotfix crystals on the front & a button closure. The shoulder strap is long enough to wear either across the body or just on one shoulder.
Finished result – front views.
Combinations – over a little black dress, my dress in the same floral fabric or with black pants.
This jacket pattern is a different style to what I would normally make and has been a challenge but I am very happy with the result and look forward to wearing it soon knowing that it is unique and that wherever I go no-one else will be wearing one the same!
All the best. Deb.
